Evidence is beginning to come out that more kids may have autism than are diagnosed. A study from South Korea is being released which contends that it is more common than most think. The study found that more children really had autism than were diagnosed with autism among the general population. Autism might be affecting more individuals than current estimates indicate.
Some children not diagnosed, according to study
The number of autistic children is more than people think according to the South Korean study being looked at for the American Psychiatry Journal. The study suggests that many kids have the disorder. Some are not even diagnosed. There were 55,000 children ages 7 to 12 who had families receive a survey. This was done over a five year period to collect information for the study, reports USA Today. Only 23,234, or 63 percent, of the families answered to the survey. This survey was done in a Seoul suburb. It was in Goyang City. It was an autism screening test that was sent out as a survey. The idea was to determine how many kids were autistic in the general population. There were more autistic kids tested than were diagnosed.
Autism could affect 1 in 38
CNN reports that 1,214 students were tested positive for autism of the 23,234 kids responses. Special schooling had only been arranged for some of those. Only 294 got this treatment. In that group, 59 percent were mentally disabled and 67 percent were autistic, states the New York Times. Of those considered autistic, 286 children were tested for autism. Only 201 children were diagnosed to really have autism though. There were about 500,000 in the area where the study was done, with random samples. The Autism Speaks foundation funded the study, for the most part. It found that 2 to 3 percent of the South Korean general population might be autistic, or one in every 38 people. The rate of autism in the U.S. is estimated to be less than that. One in 110 children has the disease, the American CDC estimates.
The importance of this
The South Korean study differs from other studies of autism in that it draws from the general population rather than just kids considered to be high risk. The implication is that more children may have autism than are diagnosed with it, and especially more girls as males have nearly four times the risk of developing autism. There is no known cure for Autism. Many times it can help to use therapy. Even this won’t work sometimes. Types of autism occur across a spectrum ranging from near catatonic disability to mild impairment. According to the CDC, it can be clear by the time a child is 2 years old that they have autism. Sometimes it takes longer to decide for sure though. The cost of caring for an individual with autism a lifetime can exceed $3.2 million.
