How To Survive On Your Own In College
Going off to an out of state college will be a life-changing event. Not only will school become increasingly harder but also you will be particular on your own. If this is your very first time without your parents then there are some key things that will make the transition easier and less chaotic.
Learn how to cook a few dishes. You don’t have to be the next Rachel Ray or Bobby Flay but a basic understanding well benefit you in the long run. Even if the dorm room you are assigned only has room for a microwave, you can still make some easy meals. Either ask the cook in your house or do a quick internet search for some tips and advice. This skill will also help you avoid the dreaded “freshman fifteen.”
Learn how to do laundry. It may seem a bit easy to put your clothes in a machine and press the a button but when your whites come out a bit red then you will understand the importance of separating colors. Also, the material of the clothes needs to be considered. While most clothes need to be ironed, some may not need it if you hang them straight out of the dryer when it is immediately finished.
Know your limits. There will be plenty of parties to attend but don’t forget the reason why you are there is to get an education. Of course, that doesn’t mean to bury your head in books all the time. Have fun but you still have to make the grade.
